Downtown San Francisco’s Mall Is Officially Closing Next Week After Ongoing Store Closures
Downtown San Francisco’s mall, currently named San Francisco Centre, will permanently close next week. The mall has been struggling for years, with numerous major retailers closing. The mall will officially close this Monday, after 20 years in business . Formerly known as Westfield Mall for many years, most stores have already left, leaving only one retailer. The mall underwent several name changes in recent years, eventually settling on San Francisco Centre. Once a bustling shopping center, the mall never recovered from the pandemic and slowly became increasingly vacant over the years. While some major retailers like Nordstrom shut down their stores in the city altogether, others like Zara closed their doors with plans to move elsewhere in the city. On Black Friday, which is usually an extremely busy day for malls across the country, the shopping center was once again quiet, making its closure no surprise. While the once-thriving shopping center has been closing along with many other stores in recent years, Downtown San Francisco has still seen new retailers moving into the city. The second Nintendo Store in the United States opened in Union Square, drawing eager crowds to downtown. Major fashion retailer Zara has announced it intends to open a massive flagship store in Union Square, another win for the city, as many other clothing stores have closed their SF locations. Even the department store Nordstrom, which was once a tenant at San Francisco Centre, has returned to SF, albeit in a smaller way. A Nordstrom Local opened on Fillmore Street, and although it’s not a traditional shopping store, it offers tailoring and online returns for customers. So far, there are no certain plans for the space , but stay tuned for more updates about the mall’s future. Source: https://secretsanfrancisco.com/downtown-san-francisco-mall-closing/
