Europe's First University Botanical Garden

The Orto botanico di Pisa, also known as the Orto Botanico dell'Università di Pisa, is a botanical garden operated by the University of Pisa, located in Pisa, Italy. 📍🌿Born in 1543 under the initiative of the Imola doctor and botanist Luca Ghini, and with the financial support of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo I de' Medici, the Botanical Garden of Pisa is the first university botanical garden in Europe. It was entrusted to the management of the renowned Imola botanist Luca Ghini. In 1563, the garden was relocated from its original riverside location (now the Medici Foundry) to near the Convent of Santa Marta, and in 1591, under the leadership of Joseph Goedenhuyze, it was moved again to its third and current location. From its early days, the garden included a gallery of natural objects (now the Natural Museum of Pisa), a library (now part of the university library), and portraits of the directors over the centuries. It also included one of the earliest iron-framed greenhouses built in Italy. Today, the garden is divided into several sections, including the plant school, gardens, ponds, greenhouses, and various buildings. The main collections include a herb garden and an arboretum, as well as the ancient Institute of Botany built between 1591 and 1595. #Italy #FlorenceBotanicalGarden #BotanicalGardenRecommendation
