F And M Trains To Permanently Swap Routes In December, Affecting Millions Of NY Commuters

The MTA has made a major overhaul, announcing it will permanently swap F and M routes between Manhattan and Queens on weekdays between 6:00am to 9:30pm. Keep in mind service will not change on weekends or during late night hours . This route switch will impact 1.2 million daily riders who take the E, F, M, and R trains—hopefully improving each line’s reliability. When are the F & M switching? ----------------------------- The route switch will officially start on December 8th, 2025 . Why are the F & M switching? ---------------------------- Higher delays often occur when multiple subway lines share the same tracks. Under this change, the E train will share tracks with only two lines instead of three, while the M train will share with three lines instead of four . This reduction will help eliminate merging delays and improve service reliability across E, F, M, and R trains. Moreover, at the moment M trains run less often than F trains. Thus, the MTA will increase peak-hour frequency on the M to alleviate any additional wait times riders may experience from the route swap.
