Federal Hall on Wall Street in New York City π½
This site of the grand Greek Revival - style Federal Hall holds significant historical importance. π’π The original Federal Hall, built in 1703, served as New York's City Hall. After the American Revolutionary War, it became the home of the first central government of the United States - the Confederation Congress. In 1789, George Washington took the oath of office here as the first President of the United States, the first Congress convened here, and the Bill of Rights was also passed here. Thus, this location is hailed as the birthplace of the U.S. government. π π’π In 1790, when the U.S. capital was moved to Philadelphia, the original Federal Hall was demolished in 1812. The building we see in the photo, completed in 1842, was initially used as a customs house and later became a branch of the U.S. Treasury. In 1955, it was designated as a national memorial to commemorate the important historical events that took place here π’π In 1965, the same year the photo was taken, the building was designated as a New York City landmark. π°οΈ So, this photo captures not just a building but an important symbol of early American history, witnessing the birth and initial development of the nation. π’π The juxtaposition of the classical and the modern in the photo also hints at the continuity of history and the passage of time. #NewYorkLife #WallStreet #Manhattan π
