Flew all the way to Denmark just for the world’s 5th best restaurant
While others arrived in style, I shamelessly took the bus and got fined 1000 Danish Kroner for evading the fare (totally unintentional). The reception even asked how I got there? Need parking? The restaurant is located in an industrial area of Copenhagen called Refshaleøen. Being directionally challenged, it took me forever to find it. Eventually, I discovered the entrance is a massive two-ton bronze door, with music playing outside. I arrived as it was getting dark, and the bronze door added to the mystery, leading diners into a alchemist’s mystical world. 🧙♀️ Ranked 5th in the 2023 World’s Best 50 and boasts two Michelin stars. I came to Copenhagen specifically for Alchemist, and after dining, I felt the restaurant is all about the concept. All the visuals are created by the in-house team. They replace the faces of historical figures with the customers’ own faces, which is super fun. There are more than twelve projection scenes throughout the experience, including computers, eyes, nature, flowers, auroras, storms… an unparalleled visual feast. 🧠 6-Hour Alchemist Experience: The time is divided among three main dining areas, with a surprise after part 2. Part 1: Features a welcome drink made to look like a daisy, an omelet that won’t fall apart, 🥟 dumpling marshmallows with a surprise filling, and snow-like ice that melts away upon eating… Part 2: The main dining area is a hemispherical space with projections covering the entire ceiling, changing every so often: Dishes include sheep’s brain, pig’s throat, pig’s blood, rabbit meat, insects, tongue, brain, chicken feet, etc. (for the adventurous) The famous “eye” is actually caviar + biscuit + raw fish Lobster roll with a strong lobster flavor 🦞 A piece that looks like plastic but tastes like the outer layer of a white rabbit candy, with a texture similar to tempura underneath 🍤 Picasso’s portrait with artichoke puree The “screaming” ice cream (too pretty to eat) is made with citrus sauce and cream A coffin-shaped chocolate It looks a bit scary at first, but it’s totally acceptable. I was a bit disappointed that there was no jellyfish on the menu this time. But I suggested the butterfly 🦋, and they made it for me! My first time eating a real butterfly!!! By the time we reached part 3, I was completely full… but they served an ant dessert, which was quite good. The non-alcoholic pairings were also delicious. We started at 7:30 and finished past 12, my contact lenses were dried out. After eating, we toured the kitchen and even took a photo with the head chef. 6 hours / 50 dishes of culinary indulgence. Truly, it was worth it! I recommend everyone to give it a try, though once is probably enough. #RestaurantInAnArtGallery #ImmersiveDiningExperience #UniqueCreativeCuisine #Michelin #MichelinTwoStars #Copenhagen #CopenhagenFood #CreativeCuisine
