Former Iwasaki House Garden(1)

Japan's Luxury Mansions Series 2: Former Iwasaki House Garden 🌟 🌇 The Old Iwasaki Residence Garden is located on the west side in Ueno Park. In 1878, when it was purchased by the first-generation head of the Mitsubishi conglomerate, Iwasaki Yataro, the land area was over 50,000 square meters, more than three times its current size. 🌿 By the time it was passed down to the third-generation head, Iwasaki Hisaya, there were more than 20 buildings on the property. 🌇 In 1945, it was requisitioned by the American occupation forces and used as the headquarters for U.S. military intelligence. It was returned to the Japanese government in 1953. 🌿 The existing structures now include a 17th-century British Jacobean-style Western-style mansion and a chalet-style billiard room (both designed and built by the British architect Josiah Conder, who laid the foundation for modern Japanese architecture), as well as a large Japanese-style study with murals by the Meiji-era painter Hashimoto Gaho (constructed by the renowned carpenter Okawa Kijiro). 🌇 #Tokyo 🌊
