Apia, the capital of Samoa located on Upolu Island's northern coast, embodies the vibrant spirit of the South Pacific. The city immediately charmed me with its cultural quirks - locals of all genders wearing traditional lavalava skirts 👗, rainbow-colored buses rumbling through streets 🚌, and more churches than I've seen anywhere else in my travels ⛪. Though the famed Immaculate Conception Cathedral (often called the South Pacific's most beautiful) was under renovation, a kind worker gave me a special tour when he learned how far I'd come. The bustling Apia Market offered authentic Samoan crafts, tropical fruits 🥥, and clothing - perfect for souvenir hunting. This peak season made car rentals scarce; I visited three agencies before finally securing the last available vehicle, a trusty Suzuki Jimny 🚙💨. Now cruising Upolu's coastal roads, I'm treated to palm-fringed lanes with ocean glimpses and charmingly chaotic "island time" traffic where chickens and dogs have right of way. Next on my itinerary: the breathtaking To Sua Ocean Trench and powerful Alofaaga Blowholes.
