Guard Change at the Parliament House Constitution Square in Greece 📍
🏢 Syntagma Square is the principal square in Athens, the capital of Greece, situated in front of the Greek Parliament House (Old Royal Palace). It is where King Otto approved the Greek Constitution on September 3, 1843, following a rebellion. At the foot of the Parliament's steps lies the renowned Monument to the Unknown Soldier, constructed in 1928 in honor of the Greek heroes who sacrificed their lives in the war of independence from Turkish rule. 🏺 On either side of the relief are inscribed the two famous quotes from the 5th century BC by the renowned Greek statesman Pericles in his funeral oration: "Here lies the tomb of the world's outstanding soldiers" and "It is the bier where the unknown soldiers are laid to rest." 🕒 The guard change occurs on the hour every hour. Dressed in traditional Greek attire and marching with a distinctive gait, they perform a professional and elaborate ceremony. The guards from the two sentry boxes begin to move towards each other, their pace slowed by 3-4 times, with exaggerated movements of great amplitude. 🏛️ On your way, you can also encounter the three neoclassical buildings of the Academy of Sciences, the University of Athens, and the National Library. 📸 #TravelDiary #Greece #Athens #Travel #GreeceTravel
