Hokusai Museum ยท The Great Wave off Kanagawa ๐
My knowledge of Japanese history is quite limited, but the art of the Edo period left a deep impression on meโKabuki, porcelain, and especially Ukiyo-e prints. ๐ธ๐ I stayed in Tokyo for a few extra days and found that the only place with a Ukiyo-e exhibition is the Hokusai Museum. ๐๐ข It's a memorial hall dedicated to the works of Katsushika Hokusai, the master of Japanese Ukiyo-e, and his disciples. Among the "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" (scenes of Mount Fuji from various locations in the Kanto region), there are two notable pieces: "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" and "A Distant View of Mount Fuji from the Mountains." Photography is not allowed in these sections. ๐ธ๐ In addition to the "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji," the museum also features his early works, including kyลka ehon (illustrated books of comic poems), bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women), genre paintings, and manga. The museum is located in Sumida Ward, close to both Senso-ji Temple and the Tokyo Skytree. ๐๐ข After leaving the museum in the evening, you can sit on the lawn in front and see the Skytree in the distance. ๐ #Ukiyo-e ๐จ #KatsushikaHokusai ๐
