Jacksonville's Forts & Beaches
Let’s start with a random fun fact: Jacksonville is the largest city by land area in the contiguous U.S. 🌎 At first glance, Jacksonville seems like just another modern American city—but dig deeper, and you’ll find layers of history, from Indigenous tribes to European clashes. 📍 Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve The Timucua people once thrived here (northern FL/southern GA) until European diseases and colonization wiped them out within a century. 😔 Now, this preserve protects both ecosystems and their legacy. Trails & Beaches: Little Talbot Island & Big Talbot Island – Pristine beaches with driftwood-strewn shores ("Boneyard Beach" is iconic). Pro tip: Bring bug spray!! 🦟 (Summer mosquitoes are vicious). Also, some parking requires a small fee (honor system). Spotted some cute mushrooms on the trail! 🍄 📍 Fort Caroline National Memorial Did you know this was originally a French fort (not Spanish or British)? Built in the 1500s, the original was destroyed, and its exact location remains a mystery. The current fort is a replica based on historical guesses. What to see: A short walk from the visitor center leads to the fort and reconstructed Timucua huts. Why no photos? 😅 I visited in summer after rain—stopping for even a second meant getting eaten alive by mosquitoes (learn from my mistake: BUG SPRAY IS A MUST). 🌊 Beach Bonus: If you’re not heading to Miami/Orlando, Jacksonville’s beaches are a solid alternative—less crowded but just as scenic! #TravelUSA #Florida #HiddenHistory #Jacksonville #BeachVibes #FortAdventures 🏰🌴📸
