Landmarks of Saskatoon
๐ฆDelta Hotels Bessborough, which we usually call the Castle Hotel, is located in the central business district of Saskatoon. ๐ฅช๐ ๐พIt was designed by Archibald and Schofield for the Canadian National Hotels of the Canadian National Railway Company, drawing inspiration from Bavarian castle architecture. ๐ฐ๐๏ธ ๐๐Groundbreaking began in 1930, and it was completed in 1932. ๐๐ ๐๐Due to the Great Depression, it didn't open its doors to guests until December 10, 1935. ๐ณ ๐From 1932 to 1966, it held the record for the tallest building in Saskatoon.๐ฅ ๐คฅOn May 30, 1931, Walter Pratt, the general manager of the Canadian National Railway's hotels, sleeping cars, and dining cars, announced that the 14th Governor General of Canada, the 9th Earl of Bessborough, had agreed to the official establishment of the hotel. It was named "Bessborough." ๐ The Earl and Countess visited the hotel under construction in 1932.๐ป ๐นIn 1972, Donald, Dick, and Mark Balzan purchased the Bessborough Hotel.๐๐ ๐ฅ In 1989, the Balzan family sold the Bessborough Hotel to Delta Hotels and renamed it Delta Bessborough. ๐ ๐The hotel was acquired by Legacy Hotels Real Estate Investment Trust in 1998, and in 1999, a $9,000,000 restoration project was completed to restore many of its historical features. ๐๏ธ๐๏ธ ๐The hotel underwent a major renovation in 2003.
