London Surroundings | A Summer Stay in Charleston 🏡🎨
Charleston House was once a major gathering spot for the Bloomsbury Group and served as the former home of painter Vanessa Bell and her lover Duncan Grant. They blended art and life, transforming this originally modest farmhouse into a vibrant, avant-garde artistic space. The house became their canvas—walls adorned with hand-painted patterns, revealing new textures; handmade fabrics often used as lampshades; and rugs and textiles featuring bold, unconventional color palettes 🧶. The ceramics collection also reflects a modernist aesthetic perspective. This place also holds memories of Vanessa’s sister, Virginia Woolf, who stayed here for periods of time, engaging in deep conversations with family and friends about art and the future of women’s writing. At Charleston House, I began to imagine what it truly means to have “a room of one’s own”—a corner where one can think, create, and escape the constraints of societal norms. Walking along the path behind the house, stretches of lush greenery unfold, with the soft undulations of distant hills on the horizon. Sitting under an old tree, lost in thought, the vast clouds seem almost within reach. With only the sound of rustling grass and occasional birdsong, it feels easier to understand the “quiet and steadfast independence” Woolf described in her writings. 📍Charleston in Firle, East Sussex, BN8 6LL 🚌 From Lewes Station, take the 25 shuttle bus (approx. 20 minutes), but plan your time carefully (runs every 2 hours). 🎫 Adult £24 / Student £12 #AhaThisIsAlsoArt #LondonExhibitions #VintageAestheticSpaces #UKExhibitions
