New York Exhibition | Hidden Gallery Gems in the East Village
On the weekend, my friends and I went downtown to shop and dine. We stumbled upon so many newly opened galleries near NYU🏫. It's perfect for a post-class stroll. 🌿 1⃣️Swiss Institute 📖First, I was drawn in by Printed Matter bookstore right next door. A niche bookstore from Chelsea has surprisingly opened a St. Marks branch. 🚶♀️Inside, I discovered a really cool exhibition space run by the non-profit Swiss Institute. 🎫Free admission—amazing! 🌷The exhibition I saw was "Ser Serpas: Hall." The entire show had a sense of ruin⚓️. 🎨The artist used a lot of trash as materials, exploring the body, movement, and construction in the unknown. And the exhibition continued on the 2⃣️nd floor. But I visited on the last day of the show😅. The next one goes on view on May 10th—can't wait! 2⃣️Broadway Gallery 🏠The outer hall featured "WHILEAWAY" by Detroit artist James Benjamin Franklin. 🏠The inner hall showcased "In the Project Room: A Wooley Reasoning" by New York-based artist Ariel Mitchell. 📅Both exhibitions run from April 13 to May 13. 🎨I was captivated by the large installation outside. Its patterns and colors reminded me of David Hockney's depictions of the American countryside. 🧩But the artist's technique is quite different. He used a variety of materials like fabric, carpets, blankets, plastic, sand, and sequins. 📌The artist said, "I was questioning my relationship to the traditional substrate/material of painting, which I felt was intimidating, precious, and therefore inhibiting." #NewYork 🌃🌟
