Nihonbashi Historical Timeline
Edo Period In 1603, Tokugawa Ieyasu began to establish Nihonbashi, which was initially a wooden bridge. During the prosperous Edo period, the area around Nihonbashi became the center of transportation and economy, and a bustling commercial district gradually developed around the bridge. 🌟 Meiji Restoration Period 🎢🌟 With the development of railways and highways, Nihonbashi underwent modernization. In 1872, it was reconstructed as a stone bridge, and in 1911, it was rebuilt again into the current Renaissance-style stone arch bridge. 🌉 🍃🌺 20th Century to Present In the 1960s, the construction of the Metropolitan Expressway covered Nihonbashi with an elevated highway, sparking controversy. 🎢🌟 However, Nihonbashi is still regarded as an important cultural heritage site. The bronze Kirin statue (symbolizing protection), the lion statue (warding off floods), and the "Japan Road Milestone" stone tablet on the bridge mark its historical significance. 🍀 🍃🌺 #Nihonbashi #citywalkTokyo #ExploringUrbanHistory #StreetStrolling 🌺
