About Tsukiji Hongan-ji Tsukiji Hongan-ji was established near Asakusa, Tokyo, in 1617. However, the temple was destroyed by a fire (the Meireki Fire) in 1657. ๐ฟ๐ In 1679, it was rebuilt on its current site by the temple's followers. The temple was once again destroyed by fire during the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. In 1934, the temple was reconstructed into its current form by architect Ito Chuta. ๐ The Origin of the Name โTsukijiโ The area where Tsukiji Hongan-ji is located was created by land reclamation led by followers from Tensho-ji. ๐ฟ๐ The name "Tsukiji" comes from the idea of "building up" (tsuki) new "land" (ji) on the sea. The area around today's Tsukiji Outer Market was once home to 58 temples. ๐ฟ๐ Now, Tsukiji Hongan-ji and the Outer Market are among Tokyo's most famous and popular tourist attractions. ๐โจ #Tokyo ๐ฟ๐
