NY’s First Hybrid-Electric Ferry Now Zips To Governors Island — And It’s 66% Faster

Governors Island just made history–and your **trip there just got greener and faster.** The **Harbor Charger, New York State’s first-ever hybrid-electric public ferry,** is now officially sailing passengers between Lower Manhattan and Governors Island. The new vessel debuted Tuesday, August 13th, marking a milestone in NYC’s maritime history and coinciding with the island’s 20th anniversary of opening to the public. Built with over 465 tons of steel (that’s roughly the equivalent of 11 subway cars), the $33 million ferry can carry 1,200 passengers plus 30 service vehicles at cruising speeds of 10-12 knots–**66% faster than current diesel-powered ferries,** making for a faster, quieter, and more sustainable trip to the island. Even better? Its battery-assisted hybrid propulsion system will **cut carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 600 tons annually,** with plans for fully electric operation once shoreside rapid-charging facilities are installed. That will save an additional 800 tons of emissions every year. What to expect on board ----------------------- * Lower-level **ADA-accessible lounge** * **Restrooms** on each level * **Air conditioning** for summer comfort Round-trip [tickets](https://www.govisland.com/plan-your-visit/ferry) cost **$5, while seniors 65+ and children under 12 ride free.** The Harbor Charger will **replace the diesel-powered Lt. Samuel S. Coursen**–the Trust’s current vehicle and passenger ferry that was commissioned by the U.S. Army in 1956 and has been in continuous use ever since–which will retire from service later this year. NYC Mayor Eric Adams stated: > Twenty years ago, Governors Island opened to the public for the first time, creating a green, clean, sustainable space for New Yorkers to enjoy. Today, we are doubling down on that legacy with the launch of this first-of-its-kind electric ferry...the Harbor Charger will carry New Yorkers and visitors alike into the future and deliver a safer, healthier city for all. The launch **marks a milestone in NYC’s maritime history** and strengthens Governors Island’s role as a hub for climate innovation, home to projects like the Billion Oyster Project and the soon-to-open New York Climate Exchange campus. And while you’re there, don’t forget you can [camp under the stars](https://secretnyc.co/collective-retreats-governors-island-camping/) right on Governors Island’s waterfront!
