NYC’s Holiday Train Show Returns To Grand Central This November—Free Admission & Holiday Magic Await

Though we only just started reaching for our hoodies before walking out the door, the 2025 holiday season is arriving in style—and so is one of New York’s most magical traditions. For its 21st year, the New York Transit Museum’s Holiday Train Show is chugging back into Grand Central Terminal, filling the station with whimsical model trains that deliver pure cheer to kids and grown-ups alike. Best of all? Admission is free! Visitors will be dazzled as Lionel model trains, a beloved part of American childhood for more than a century, zip along a dazzling 34-foot, two-level track. The fleet includes everything from Metro-North commuter trains and vintage subways to the whimsical Polar Express, all winding their way past mini versions of iconic NYC landmarks—including a pint-sized Grand Central itself. At the snowy finish line: a glittering North Pole village that makes the whole display feel like a winter fairytale. What makes this year’s Holiday Train Show extra special is that it also celebrates the 40th anniversary of MTA Arts & Design, the program that has transformed New York’s transit system into one of the largest public art galleries in the world. Alongside the trains, visitors will discover bold, colorful artwork by Poster Program artists James Yang and Erin K. Robinson, whose illustrations capture the creativity, diversity, and vibrant spirit of New York. The best part of it all, admission to the Holiday Train Show is completely free —making it one of the city’s most joyful and accessible holiday events.
