Once A Historic Brooklyn Diner, This Iconic NYC Landmark Was Just Lifted By Crane And Moved To Its New Cinematic Home
Typically, when we talk about something relocating in NYC, we mean it’s moving to a new address. But it’s not every day that a whole building is lifted by a crane and literally dropped into a new spot . Then again, this *is* New York City, so are we really that surprised? But before we dive into that, let’s rewind . Back in 1968, the Wythe Diner officially opened its doors , beginning what would become a historic run as an iconic Brooklyn eatery, wearing many hats during its time. True to its name, it began as a diner, before being sold in 1997 and operating as a relish restaurant up until 2010. Eventually it operated as La Equina up until 2018. It made appearances in various films throughout its five decades , including “Men In Black 3” and “The Good Shepard,” as well as being used for various pop-up shops including the Chanel Diner. On December 8th, the diner, which weighs over 50-tons, was lifted by crane and transported onto a flatbed truck to travel to its new home , just over a mile away from its original Williamsburg location. And the aforementioned new home is very fitting to its on-screen history: the iconic railcar-style eatery is returning to its cinematic roots, moving to Steiner Studios in the Brooklyn Navy Yard . The studio is New York City’s largest film and television production facility, and has hosted major productions such as *Inside Man*, *The Wolf of Wall Street*, *Men in Black 3*, *The Greatest Showman*, and acclaimed series like *Boardwalk Empire* and *The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel*. As for the diner’s original lot, it’s set to be transformed into a mixed-use development , with retail spaces on the ground floor and housing above, bringing a new chapter of life to the Williamsburg site. The Wythe Diner may be leaving its Williamsburg curb , but this local star is far from retiring. We’ll miss the fun pop-ups and nostalgic vibes , but we can’t wait to see it shine on the big screen once again.
