Paulina Olowska: Maternal Contradictions 🧵

🌀 Pace Gallery’s New York flagship space is proud to present Polish artist Paulina Olowska’s first solo exhibition at Pace, “Mother: An Unsavory Monologue,” a multi-dimensional fusion of painting and ongoing performance. 👩 Olowska has transformed the gallery’s seventh-floor exhibition hall into an immersive theater stage, boldly reinterpreting the 1924 play “Mother” by Polish artist, playwright, and theorist Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz within the exhibition. 🎩 This surrealistic masterpiece by Witkiewicz has challenged Polish theatrical and artistic traditions, drawing audiences into theaters for a century since its inception—Jerzy Jarocki staged this renowned play at the Stary Theater in Kraków in 1964 and 1972; Olowska performed a well-received adaptation at the Tate Modern in London in 2015. 🎭 Olowska brings a fresh interpretation of this classic play in the exhibition, engaging in a poetic and provocative exploration of maternal archetypes, artistic heritage, and the ghosts of cultural myths that linger in the mind. Drawing inspiration from Ewa Lassek’s portrayal in Jarocki’s legendary Kraków production, Olowska brings a modern feminist perspective to her work. 👩‍🍼 Additionally, the exhibition features four large-scale portraits by Olowska titled “The Mother,” inspired by the artist’s muse, Polish model Anja Rubik. These paintings, inspired by the photography of Kacper Kasprzyk, exude energy and capture the multifaceted contradictions of motherhood: strength and vulnerability, beauty and decay.
