Pitt’s Brings Southern Comfort & Whimsical Charm To NYC Via Fried Saltines, Cold Meatloaf Sandwiches, & Animal-Shaped Décor
Quirky is surely one word to describe Pitt’s, a Red Hook newcomer that’s serving fried saltines and pancake soufflé in a space adorned with animal portraits, a mini gumball machine, a brown bear-shaped toilet roll dispenser, and carrot wallpaper. But \_\_\_–it’s quirky in the best way possible. Pitt’s opened earlier this year from Jeremy Salamon, the chef behind Agi’s Counter, the Crown Heights Eastern European lunch counter beloved for breathing new life into the nostalgic egg cream. Here, however, Salamon is switching gears to a more Southern-influenced bistro style vibe, and with that comes a menu of food items you likely wouldn’t expect to dig into here in NYC. That’s to say a meal at Pitt’s will have you ordering dishes like Pancake Soufflé, Gouda Pimento & Fried Saltines, a Cold Meatloaf Tea Sandwich, Veal Sweetbreads over Yellow Eye Beans, and Pixie Pie, inspired by the Atlantic Beach Pie made famous by Crooks Corner in Chapel Hill, NC. The restaurant’s Instagram refers to itself as “a joyful mess,” and that’s a description we lovingly agree with. Cocktails along the likes of a Negroni Sazerac with aged gin, strawberry, and absinthe, and Taeko’s Irish Coffee, with Barley Mizu Shochu, cold cream, and nutmeg and are being poured (and prepared using claw-shaped tongs!). But if you think the menu items are quirky, prepare for a space that’s even quirkier. Pitt’s is housed in Red Hook’s former Fort Defiance spot, and its whimsical interior has just the right amount of kitsch. Animal portraits adorn the carrot wallpapered walls, a mini gumball machine sits on a shelf above the bar, and a ceramic cow head (with a neck that looks more like that of a giraffe) holds straws. There’s even a brown bear-shaped toilet roll dispenser in the bathroom. And the decor isn’t all random–some of it has been sourced from Nana’s kitchen, with love (or so says their Instagram)! Reservations for Pitt’s can be made on their website. And if you can’t snag one or decide you’d like to check out the space last minute, counter and bar space is reserved for walk-ins. 📍 347 Van Brunt St, Brooklyn Source: https://secretnyc.co/pitts-nyc/
