Pohara Off-the-Beaten-Path Attraction: Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave π
Faith is truly magical. After visiting the cave church in Egypt π, I stumbled upon another less-visited spot this time. Although the worship of the Hindu god Shiva is widespread, the temple here in Pokhara, integrated with a natural cave, truly broadens one's horizons. π The temple is located near the city center of Pokhara and is a rare cave with stalagmites and stalactites in Nepal, measuring 200 meters long and 660 feet high, with a very dim and slippery interior. β¨ Inside the cave, there is a statue of the Hindu god Shiva [out of respect for local beliefs, no photos are taken in the dark and damp cave]. The ancient stone carvings, featuring a five-headed snake body, look very old and mysterious, giving a sense of primitive totems. β¨ This cave was discovered by a shepherd from Pokhara in the 1950s. Its old name was "Adhero Bhawan," which literally means "dark habitat." β¨ The cave was named after the late King Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev (the then ruler of the country), who visited the site immediately after reading about it in a Newari newspaper. The cave was officially named Mahendra after it was inaugurated by King Mahendra. π There is also a small waterfall nearby, Devi's Fall Pokhara π¦ Right across, there is a deep underground cave that seems to be connected to Pokhara's groundwater system. π #TempleTour #ShivaTemple #PokharaGuide #Off-the-Beaten-PathTravel #UnforgettableSights π
