Pokhara, Nepal | Sunrise and Machhapuchhre
At 4:30 AM in Pokhara, stars spilled across the sky as we raced on a motorcycle. We waited at Sarangkot for sunrise, and when the clouds parted, there they were—the mountains I’d dreamed of: 🏔️ Machhapuchhre (6,997m) 🏔️ Annapurna I (8,090m) 🏔️ Dhaulagiri (8,167m) 🏔️ Annapurna II (7,937m) On the way back, we passed Pokhara’s old town. Glancing back, Machhapuchhre and Annapurna loomed behind us. What feels like a rare wonder to us is just daily life for the people here. 📝 Pokhara has two top spots for sunrise and (snow-capped mountain) views: Sarangkot and World Peace Pagoda. The former offers up-close views; the latter, distant vistas with Phewa Lake in the frame. (Naturally, I chose the close-up!) 📝 Sarangkot is about 5km from Phewa Lake. You can take a taxi, rent a motorcycle, or hire a motorbike driver—prices range from 1,500-2,500 NPR. 📝 Leave early! The sunrise I caught was at 6 AM; we arrived just after 5 AM, but time flew by because the views were so stunning. Check the sunrise time in advance and head out accordingly. 📝 Weather is everything! I waited four days, finally catching a clear day. It rained the night before, but when I stepped out and saw stars, I exhaled. Though after sunrise, the mountains stayed clear for a few hours before heavy rain hit again. Spotting them really is luck.
