Portugal Travel Log ~ Jerónimos Monastery
🌟After breakfast, we hopped on a bus straight to the monastery, where a long line had already formed. At first, we got in the wrong queue; facing the road, the entrance on the left is for group access, a queue set up for tour groups, while the right side is for regular independent travelers. We lined up while booking our tickets online. By the time we left, it was almost noon, and the line was still incredibly long. 🚌👣 🌟"Known in Portuguese as Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, this magnificent monastery is located in the Belém area of Lisbon, Portugal. It’s one of the most prominent landmarks in Lisbon and is considered one of the most successful examples of Portuguese Manueline architecture. In 1983, it was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO along with the nearby Belém Tower. The nuns here are said to have invented the Portuguese egg tart. 🌟Around 1450, the Hermitage of Restelo was established by Henry the Navigator and was built on the same site. In 1497, Vasco da Gama and his crew prayed here the night before they set sail for India. The old monastery is now in disrepair. 🌟The new monastery was planned by Manuel I (1515-1520) to commemorate Vasco da Gama’s successful return from India. Originally intended for the funeral ceremonies of the House of Aviz members, it later also became a church for sailors to pray before setting sail." #Portugal #PortugalTravel #PortugalTourism #Lisbon #LisbonTravel #LisbonTourism #LisbonTravelGuide #LisbonFreeWalk #LisbonOneDayTour
