Recife & Beyond: A Bus Travel Guide

After spending a week in Recife, I can confidently say—this city feels like a breath of fresh air! Compared to other northern Brazilian cities, Recife is modern, clean, and refreshingly normal (no peeling paint or moldy buildings—almost brought me to tears 😭). The best time to explore? After 4 PM, when the ocean breeze kicks in and the sun isn’t too harsh. 📍 Where I Stayed: Boa Viagem Beach 🏖️ Safe & convenient: Close to the airport (R$20-30 taxi), tons of restaurants/supermarkets. Evening strolls along the beach = perfect 🌊 (but no swimming—shark warnings! 🦈). Felt safe walking alone at 9 PM—rare for Brazil! 🏙️ Old Town (Recife Antigo) ✅ Praça da República – Grand buildings, open squares. ✅ Ponte Maurício de Nassau – Sunset views 🌇. ✅ R. do Bom Jesus – Charming colonial street (but lots of beggars—expect 5+ approaches per meal). ⚠️ Avoid certain areas at night (homeless camps). 🎨 Olinda (UNESCO Town) 🚌 Bus R$4.30, ~40 mins from Boa Viagem (Google Maps’ timing is unreliable—I waited 30+ mins once!). Safe & picturesque: Colorful houses + ocean views 🏡🌊. Must-visit: R. do Amparo (quaint shops) Misericórdia Church (panoramic views) Cafeteria Bonfim ☕ (cozy but mediocre coffee). 🐔 Porto de Galinhas (Missed It!) Bus (~1.5-2 hrs), but gave up after long waits 😅. Famous for beaches & natural pools—next time! 🦀 Where to Eat: Seafood Heaven! 1️⃣ Ilha do Guaiamum – Blue crab ("Grande" size = R$36.90 + 10% tip). Sometimes sold out! 🦀 Sushi is pricey but delicious (R$61 for a few pieces). 2️⃣ Point da Ostra – Dirt-cheap oysters! 12 medium = R$35 (+10% tip). ⚠️ Ask for LESS salt—they go overboard! #Travel #SoloTravel #HiddenGems #Brazil #Recife #Olinda #PortoDeGalinhas
