Remai Modern Art Gallery
The design of Remai Modern echoes the flat prairie landscapes of Saskatchewan while paying homage to the region’s traditional low-rise architecture, linear barns, and farmhouses 🌾🏡. Four cantilevered horizontal volumes face the riverbank to the south and Second Avenue to the east 🌊🛣️. The building’s southern façade spans the entire site, with the ground floor entirely enclosed by glass, creating a continuous and luminous riverside public space 🌞🏞️. The museum features entrances on all four sides, seamlessly integrating with the pedestrian pathways along the riverbank 🚶♀️🌉. Public spaces on every level are designed to connect with the river as much as possible 🌊🔗. The atrium unifies the floor plan and provides spaces for gathering and interaction 🤝🎨. A grand staircase on the ground floor offers a continuous pathway through all levels 🚶♂️. The building’s exterior is clad in a layer of rust-colored metal mesh, inspired by Saskatoon’s historic landmark: the Bessborough Hotel (CNR, 1932) 🏨🕰️. Remai Modern bridges history and the future 🕰️🚀. By forging a strong connection with the Mendel Art Gallery, it reinforces the pivotal role of art in making Saskatoon “an innovative city of lifelong learning” 🎨📚. #Canada #CanadianLife #CanadianArtGallery 🇨🇦🖼️
