San Francisco’s Chinatown Will Soon Have Free Public Wifi — Here’s What To Know

Did you know that San Francisco offers free public Wifi? The public wifi is fittingly called #SFWifi, and the access has now been extended to include Chinatown. The expansion of the public wifi was announced last week, and will give hundreds of households access . More than half of the households that will gain access do not have an existing broadband network, making the expansion of the public network an exciting addition for many in the neighborhood. > “Access to reliable Wi-Fi in San Francisco’s Chinatown isn’t just about connection, it’s about equity. It ensures seniors, families, and small businesses can access resources, opportunities, and community in the digital age,” said Supervisor Sauter [in a recent statement](https://www.sf.gov/news-mayor-lurie-supervisor-sauter-bring-free-public-wifi-to-chinatown) . “I want to thank the Department of Technology for leading this project to increase Wi-Fi in Chinatown and Mayor Lurie for advocating for the residents.” The city’s public wifi serves 20 hubs across the city , often in major public gathering spaces, such as Civic Center, Union Square, and public parks. San Franciscans can expect wifi in Chinatown starting in early 2026. The wifi will roll out in two phases, starting with Grant Avenue between Bush and Broadway, which will be completed by the iconic Lunar New Year Parade in March of 2026. Grant Avenue is a popular street in the neighborhood, home to many thriving businesses and the host of parades and night markets. By the end of 2026, the wifi coverage will extend to Stockton Street, including alleyways and side streets. > “Our department is proud to provide free, high-speed internet to the heart of Chinatown,” said Mike Makstman, City Chief Information Officer and Director of the Department of Technology . “Not only do we work in this neighborhood, we are a part of this neighborhood, and some of us grew up here.
