San Francisco’s Phoenix Hotel Known For Hosting Rock Stars Is Closing — But Not Before Throwing One Last Party
One of San Francisco’s coolest hotels will close its doors at the end of 2025, after a historic run hosting some of the industry’s most iconic musicians. The retro hotel is known for hosting rock stars throughout the years, from Nirvana to Pearl Jam; many of music’s most recognizable names stayed at the hotel. After decades in operation, the Phoenix Hotel’s lease is up, and the hotel is preparing to say goodbye to San Francisco by the end of the year. While the hotel’s closure is unfortunate, they still have one last party planned before closing their doors. The hotel also frequently hosts concerts on the outdoor patio , with many popular DJs performing at the venue over the years. Earlier this November, the hotel held a free party specifically intended for Tenderloin residents to celebrate the neighborhood and the hotel’s long history. As the hotel prepares to close, it is planning one last major party for New Year’s Eve. The finale party will feature Mighty Real & Juanita MORE, inside the hotel’s bar and outdoor pool area. Guests can also expect a DJ set from David Harness, Subeaux, Bugie, and Poundcake during the party. The party starts at 8 pm, and the heated patio will stay open until 1 am, and the indoor bar will close at 2 am. Tickets are on sale now, and start at $25.39. The San Francisco Baking Institute bought the hotel from the Ziegler family in 2024 for $9.1 million , although their plans for the property are still unclear. The hotel first opened in 1987 , when Chip Conley bought the old motor lodge that had fallen into disrepair. He hoped the large parking lot would draw touring bands with a place to park their buses. His plan paid off, with the hotel well known for its famous guest list, including David Bower, Kurt Cobain, Neil Young, the Beastie Boys, Sinead O’Connor, and many more.
