San Francisco's Century-Old Castro Theatre
Recently, I heard that Castro Theatre—one of SF’s most iconic historic cinemas—will close for renovations starting this February, with plans to reopen no earlier than 2025. So, I decided to catch one last movie in the OG Castro before its transformation. 🎬 A Night of Sci-Fi Madness This screening was part of the "Movie for Maniacs" series—a double feature! First Half: Blade Runner (1982) 🤖✨ Second Half: RoboCop (1987) 🔫⚡ For those familiar with Castro Theatre, you know the drill: Before the film, there’s always a speech or live instrumental performance 🎹🎤. Upon entry, each guest gets a special movie card—a nostalgic keepsake! 🎟️ 🚀 Missed This Screening? No Worries! Next Sunday, the theatre will screen the legendary 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) 🌌🪐—another must-watch for sci-fi lovers! 🌈 More Than Just a Theatre Located in the heart of Castro Street, the theatre is part of SF’s vibrant LGBTQ+ district. Before or after the movie, you can explore: Rainbow flags lining the streets 🏳️🌈. Queer-owned cafes, bars, and bookshops ☕📚. Historic LGBTQ+ landmarks, including the Harvey Milk Plaza. 🎥 Why Castro Theatre Matters Opened in 1922, it’s a San Francisco Historic Landmark 🏛️17. Known for its Spanish Colonial Baroque façade and rare leather ceiling—the last of its kind in the U.S. 🎭4. A cultural hub for indie films, sing-alongs, and LGBTQ+ events 🎶❤️. 🔜 What’s Next? The theatre’s renovation (led by Another Planet Entertainment) aims to modernize it while preserving its historic charm. Until then, catch a final flick or two before it goes dark! #SanFrancisco #BayArea #WeekendVibes #SciFiMovies #BladeRunner #RoboCop #2001ASpaceOdyssey #LGBTQSF #CastroTheatre 🎞️✨
