St. Louis Restaurant Hunt | Akar: A Fusion Flavor Surprise in the City
I finally got to visit Akar with friends, a spot we’d been talking about for ages but kept missing! The restaurant isn’t very big, but it’s cozy—you can choose to sit outside and enjoy the breeze, or inside under warm lights. We opted for a window seat, where we could glance at the street view while eating, which made the meal even more pleasant~ 🥩 Short rib | ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This short rib deserves a full 5 stars! The meat is so tender that it falls apart with just a gentle poke of a fork—no effort needed to chew, even great for people with sensitive teeth. It’s packed with beefy flavor, paired with a light sauce that’s rich but not greasy. The carrots on the side are also soft and (glutinous), soaked up the meat’s juices, making every bite flavorful. They’re not just “filler” veggies—I even finished all the carrots! 🐟 Fish of the day | ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Akar’s “Fish of the day” changes daily, so it’s best to ask the staff about the day’s selection before ordering. We had sea bass this time—its flesh is incredibly tender, breaking into small pieces with a light pinch. It tastes fresh, like a bite of the ocean, with no fishy aftertaste. The asparagus on the side is also amazing: crisp, juicy, and slightly sweet, complementing the fish’s freshness perfectly. One bite of fish and one of asparagus, and the taste is super refreshing! 🍝 Kee Mao (Thai-style stir-fried noodles) | ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This Thai stir-fried noodle was a nice surprise! The noodles are wide and flat, coated in a signature Thai sauce with a mild spiciness that’s not overwhelming. There are several large, bouncy shrimp hidden in the noodles, plus tender eggs and fresh veggies—every bite has a different texture. The only small downside is that you can’t adjust the spiciness, but it’s still totally worth ordering~ Pro tip: I was so busy eating that I forgot to take a photo of the menu. The second picture is one I found online, which is identical to the menu we had that day—feel free to use it as a reference! Akar leans more towards Asian fusion cuisine, combining Thai flavors with fresh local ingredients. None of the three dishes we ordered disappointed—it’s great for both friend gatherings and dates. #RestaurantHunt #DateNightRestaurant #StLouisFoodRecommendations #StLouis #Akar
