The Best Meal in Mexico City – A Truly Local Restaurant 🍴🌮

We were so lucky to have local friends guide us to this authentic Oaxacan restaurant—a true hidden gem known mostly to locals! ⚠️ After your meal, you can visit the Frida Kahlo Museum, and I’ll also share a great local market route at the end! 🗺️✨ 📍 Doña Lulá Our friends told us this is their go-to spot for family gatherings and the most delicious food in their opinion. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with vibrant tablecloths and colorful dishes—a signature Oaxacan style! 🎨💖 The second floor has a lovely little balcony where you can enjoy lunch with a gentle breeze and plenty of sunlight—absolutely delightful. ☀️😊 ‼️ Heads up: The menu is only in Spanish! But you can order by showing the photos below. Tlayuda – A Oaxacan Classic A giant crispy corn tortilla topped with black bean paste and quesillo cheese. I loved the smooth texture of the black bean spread! You can add as much guacamole as you want—it’s amazing together. 🌯🧀 Guacamole Y Chapulines We learned an authentic way to eat this: take a tortilla chip, add guacamole, and top it with fried grasshoppers (chapulines)! 🦗✨ As someone from Yunnan, eating insects is nothing new, but here they’re prepared with more saltiness, adding a crunchy texture and extra flavor to the guacamole and chips. Grilled Meat Platter Our friends ordered this mixed grill platter—it included ribs, sliced meat, chorizo (grilled sausage), and more! The greens came with grilled cactus (unique texture!) and cheese-flavored roasted green peppers (my favorite—so tasty!). You can order this by showing the picture—highly recommended! The fried pork skin was just like Yunnan style—so familiar and delicious. 🥩🔥 Enchiladas with Various Moles I’m not sure about the exact names of the three moles we tried, but you can Google them or just order by color! 🟤🟡🔴 Mole has a very distinctive flavor—it’s a Oaxacan specialty and worth trying, though it might take some getting used to! Hidden Gem: The tortillas here are handmade and freshly grilled. My friend got me one right off the grill—piping hot, soft, and chewy! It’s completely different from cooled taco shells and incredibly delicious. 🌽❤️ After the meal, our friends took us to the Coyotes market area. Navigate to Fuente de los Coyotes 🗺️. For handicrafts, check out Bazar Artesanal Mexicano inside—great prices! The Frida Museum is within walking distance. Our friends also recommended an ice cream shop: El Kiosko de Coyoacán. 🍦😋 #MexicoCityFood #MexicoCityRestaurants #ChicagoFoodExplorer #MexicanCuisine #OaxacanFood #LocalEats #HiddenGems #FoodieAdventure #CulturalFlavors #TravelAndEat #AuthenticMexican #MarketTour #FridaKahlo #HandmadeTortillas #InsectCuisine #FoodWithFriends
