The Former Iwasaki Residence Garden (Tokyo) 🌸
The garden was built in 1896 for Iwasaki Yatarō, the founder of Mitsubishi, by his eldest son, Iwasaki Hisaya. 🌇🌿 It was designed by the British architect Josiah Conder, who is known as the "Father of Modern Japanese Architecture." 🌟 At that time, there were more than 20 buildings in the residence, but now only three remain: the Western-style building (Yōkan), the Japanese-style building (Wakan), and the Billiard House. 🏰 🌇🌿 The residence is famous for its unique blend of Japanese and Western styles. The architecture, lifestyle, and garden design all reflect this fusion of cultures. 🍃 🌇🌿The Yōkan is a two-story pure Western-style residence with a wooden structure and a basement. Its design incorporates various European architectural styles, including features from the British Renaissance period. 🏬 The Billiard House is styled like a Swiss chalet and is connected to the Yōkan by an underground passage. 🎱 🌇🌿 The Wakan is a pure Japanese-style building in the Shoin-zukuri style, located southwest of the Yōkan. It is integrated with the Yōkan and can be accessed internally. 🏮 Josiah Conder is highly respected in Japan. There is even a statue of him in front of the University of Tokyo's architecture department. He was also the teacher of the famous Japanese architect Tatsuno Kingo. 🎓 #Tokyo #FormerIwasakiResidenceGarden 🌇🌿
