The illusion of getting your money's worth at Richmond buffet
I’ve been to The Meat Up BBQ many times before for their QQ-style fried chicken skewers and grilled skewers. Last time, I ordered their mala tang (spicy numbing soup) for delivery, and it was awful—but I still couldn’t resist trying their lunch buffet combo of mala tang + skewers. And wow, it’s seriously cheap! Only $32.99! 💬 Turns out, you really have to dine in to know—their mala tang is actually delicious!! Why was the takeout version so bad? 🤔️ And the skewers? No surprise, they’ve always been solid. Mala Tang Options (SO MANY!): 🐙 Seafood: Octopus, squid, black cod, and basa fish are all great. Must-try: beef tripe! 🥬 Veggies: Spinach and cilantro are a must-add! 🧆 Meatballs: Fish roe pouches, sea urchin balls, salted egg yolk balls, mochi balls—my picky stomach LOVES these! 🍜 Carbs: Fried dough sticks (perfect for soaking up broth!) and konjac noodles. 🥩 Meat: Beef, pork, lamb—pick your fave! 🍄 Mushrooms: Enoki, seafood mushrooms, fresh shiitake—all good! Plus tofu and more—just load up on whatever you like! 7 Soup Bases: 🔴 Classic Maocai 🟠 Sichuan Spicy 🟢 Green Pepper 🟡 Rich Bone Broth 🟣 Secret Tomato 🔵 Thai Tom Yum 🟤 Mushroom (Veggie) My top pick? Maocai broth—so fragrant and flavorful! Green pepper and tom yum are great too. Not into spice? Bone broth or tomato are mild but still tasty. If you want extra kick, there’s a DIY sauce station! 🍢 Skewers: Fewer options, but beef skewers and grilled chicken wings are a must! The mini Orléans-style skewers are decent too. Honestly, if I hadn’t gone for two rounds of mala tang, I could’ve eaten ten wings—they’re that good!! 📣 Final thoughts: Super crowded (expect a wait), skewers come out slow (and sometimes wrong), but the service is super friendly. Dessert ice cream? Also great. Overall, huge value for the price—worth trying their lunch buffet at least once!
