The jellyfish cooker who wants to take the casserole home
First off, this place is really popular—by 6:30 PM on a Saturday, there was already a line! My first impression when walking in was great 😄. The reception area had White Rabbit candies, the decor was full of Chinese style, the chopstick rests were little zodiac animal figurines, and they used a mahjong tile to hold down the bill at checkout. Major props for this cultural touch 🉑! Let’s talk about the food. The West Lake Smoked Fish was so good—even by domestic Chinese standards! The seasoning was similar to the fried hairtail at Xin Rong Ji: slightly sweet, slightly sour, crispy outside and tender inside. A must-order! 👍 The Clay Pot Fish Fillet was my favorite—garlic and onions in the clay pot were all softened, and their aroma seeped into the tender perch slices. Right after eating, I ordered a clay pot online to try replicating it at home, hhhh 😆! The vegetable dishes—Sichuanese Broth Sponge Gourd and Sakura Shrimp Choi Sum—were solid too. Not greasy or salty, with the natural sweetness of the veggies. P.S. “Sakura shrimp” here just means dried shrimp 😉! 🦐 Dim sum: The shrimp dumplings themselves were good—soft, chewy skin—but they served them with aged vinegar?? 🤔 The sesame balls, like the ones back home, had green tea filling and were tasty~ Just note there are only two per order! 🐔 The Tea-Smoked Chicken, which looked the most appetizing, was a letdown 😔. I was drooling when the server was carving it, but while the drumsticks and wings were flavorful, there was no tea smoke flavor, guys! Overall, it was a good meal. Four of us ate for $158. The ambiance is nice for gatherings, and the food doesn’t flop. I get why reviews on Xiaohongshu are mixed—maybe as Chinese people, we have higher expectations for Chinese brands. Seeing white servers was a small “first blood,” and unconsciously converting prices to RMB was a “double kill” 😂. But compared to other Midtown Chinese restaurants at the same price point, it’s worth it. Manage your expectations, and you won’t be disappointed! ✨ Grandma's Home ✨ 56 W 22nd St, New York, NY 10010 That’s it for today’s share—hope you liked it! Follow me for more NYC life and food finds.
