The Most Beautiful Fall Scenery Near Las Vegas – Mt. Charleston 🍂⛰️
The most stunning autumn views I’ve ever seen were actually near Las Vegas! Mt. Charleston is about a 45-minute drive from the city. While it was still hot downtown in early October, the birch trees up in the mountains had already turned a brilliant golden yellow. 🍁✨ This time, we hiked the South Loop Trail (officially called the Mt. Charleston National Recreation Trail on the map). We went as far as Echo Overlook—round trip was about 4 miles, making it a perfect and relaxing day trip. 🥾🧭 We started around 10 AM. Parking was a bit tricky—the lot was full, so we had to park further down the road. It looked like many early hikers were finishing up, so going a little later might help you snag a spot! If you use Google Maps, it might direct you to a picnic area that charges a fee—so try to find street parking instead. Some people go in the afternoon to avoid crowds, but I don’t recommend it—the sun’s angle later in the day can block some of the best views. Leaves just don’t glow as brightly without sunlight! ☀️🍃 If you’re confident in your balance and fitness, you can try taking the river valley route uphill (marked in red on the last photo). You’ll need to find your own path and climb over rocks (watch out for loose stones underfoot! 🪨), but you’ll be fully immersed in the autumn colors with hardly anyone else around. Once you reconnect with the main trail, take it downhill—it’s safer and offers different scenery. Heads up: The trail has lots of loose gravel, so it can be slippery on the way down. If you’re as prone to slipping as I am, wear proper hiking shoes! 👟🔻 Have you been to Mt. Charleston in the fall? What’s your favorite trail?
