The Oldest Museum in the Netherlands: Teylers Museum 🏛️🔬
Nestled in Haarlem, the Teylers Museum is the oldest museum in the Netherlands, established in 1784. The original hall, built at that time, still displays a vast collection of minerals and fossils. Founded as an institution for art and scientific knowledge, it initially served as a laboratory and workshop. 🎨Contributing to the further development of natural science, the first director of Teylers Museum, Martinus van Marum, conducted studies on static electricity in the oval hall. He ordered mill and crane models to demonstrate hydraulic principles and acquired fossils such as those of a mosasaurus and Homo sapiens testes for future research. The museum houses an extensive collection of fossils and paintings, with four Archaeopteryx fossils, some of which were even purchased by the Natural History Museum in London. The fossil collection also includes many large ammonites and brachiopods, which are extremely valuable. 🏛️Amethyst, opal, malachite, diamonds... It's important to note that many items labeled as "im" are imitations, and uncut stones can be difficult for the average person to recognize. Wybrand Hendriks, a native Dutch painter and a local of Haarlem, was deeply influenced by Vermeer but incorporated his personal touch into his works. For example, this "Girl Pouring Milk"~~ Children can also participate in a "treasure hunt" (speurtocht), and after finding the correct answers, they can receive a small piece of a fossil and mineral as a reward at the shop near the exit. 📍The museum is closed on Mondays, and open from 10-17 on Tuesdays to Sundays. The adult ticket price is 15€, children under 3 enter for free, 6-17 years old is 2.5€, and museum card holders enter for free.
