Tony-Winning ‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’ Is Closing For Good On Broadway After 7 Years

*Moulin Rouge! The Musical* will soon say “curtains up” one last time. After seven years, the Tony-winning musical is **set to close on Broadway** for good. Its final performance will be at Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre on July 26, 2026. Though producers **didn’t give a reason behind the closure,** *Variety* notes that the musical is “enormously expensive to mount because of the music rights and the elaborate, glittering set.” Based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 hit film, *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* is based on a bohemian, star-crossed romance in 1899 Paris. It **first took to the Broadway stage on July 25, 2019** following previews on June 28, 2019 and a summer 2018 run at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre. In a statement, producer Carmen Pavlovic said: > It’s truly been the honor of a lifetime bringing this exceptional show to Broadway. We couldn’t have done it without Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin’s trust in allowing us to adapt their iconic film for the stage and for their creative guidance and generosity throughout...We look forward to six more months of celebrating the remarkable people who created this show and those who perform eight times a week. Pavlovic went on to praise Alex Timbers’ vision and leadership, along with the **“unmatched” passion and artistry** of the entire creative team. During its time on Broadway the musical **won 10 Tony Awards,** including Best Musical, at the 74th Annual Tony Awards. The musical is is directed by Tony winner Alex Timbers, with a book by Tony winner John Logan and a score that celebrates more than 160 years of music. Over **12 million audience members have seen the show** across 15 productions worldwide–it’s currently playing on Broadway, across North America on a national tour, in London’s West End, in Germany, Korea, the Netherlands, a World Tour, and in non-replica productions in Scandinavia and Italy. At the time of its closing, the musical will have **played 2,265 regular performances,** 24 previews, and be the 36th longest-running show in Broadway history. Though we can hear theater lovers’ hearts breaking all over NYC, the announcement doesn’t come without a bit of positivity–Pavlovic stated that there are **more exciting announcements to come** before they take their final bow. Until the curtains drop one last time, **we’ll see you at the Moulin Rouge, Chickens! ✨** Source: [https://secretnyc.co/tony-winning-moulin-rouge-the-musical-closing-for-good-on-broadway-after-7-years/](https://secretnyc.co/tony-winning-moulin-rouge-the-musical-closing-for-good-on-broadway-after-7-years/)
