Waymo Is Now Giving Rides To And From SFO — Here’s What To Know About The Expanded Service
San Franciscans are accustomed to seeing Waymo and other driverless vehicles around the city. Waymo is regularly used by San Franciscans as an alternative to ride-share apps , although its autonomous vehicles have garnered mixed opinions . While some are frequent users, other San Franciscans cite safety and economic concerns, especially with the tragic death of a beloved cat that was hit by a Waymo in recent months. Despite this, Waymo has continued to work at expanding the service area in the Bay Area. As of today, Waymo has expended their service map to include rides to and from San Francisco International Airport . Previously, the driverless cars were unable to provide rides to the airport, although plans to expand have been underway for months. For now, rides to SFO will be offered only to select customers , with service expanding to all riders in the coming months. Riders hailing a Waymo at the airport will be picked up at the SFO Rental Car Center, which you can access via the air train. In 2025, Waymo announced it had secured permits to map SFO roadways and expected to begin service to the airport in the near future. So far, Waymo’s service area covers 260 square miles in the Bay Area, and the addition of SFO comes just as the Bay Area prepares for an influx of tourism ahead of the Super Bowl. Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara is hosting the championship game on February 8, with numerous events, major concerts, and more planned for the weekend. While Waymo is currently the most common autonomous-vehicle service in San Francisco, another robotaxi service has begun allowing riders in select neighborhoods. Zoox vehicles look very different than your typical car, and are only giving rides in the Mission, SoMa, and Design District. You can learn more about Waymo’s expanded service area here.
