We quietly watched the sunset on a small island in the Hudson River(1)
A friend came to the US on a business trip and visited me in New York during the Thanksgiving holiday. For this long-lost friend, I didn’t hesitate to take him to my private walking & date route: from Hudson Yard along The High Line Park to Little Island 🏝️… 🌟 Little Island is like an experimental island “planted” on the water: undulating terrain, scattered plants, viewpoints overlooking the Manhattan skyline, and the amphitheater facing the Hudson. When we arrived on the island, the sky, which had been overcast all day, split open, and the sunset poured warmly onto everyone’s face 🌇. New Yorkers and tourists from all over the world, regardless of language or skin color, just sat quietly side by side in the amphitheater on the island, watching the sun slowly dip into the river. 🌊 At that moment, I truly felt that the design here seemed to treat “watching the sunset” as something the city should take seriously. 🍃 This kind of space makes you understand a bit of the ambition of New York’s urban designers: It’s not about creating another “Instagrammable spot,” but about returning as much of the space that should belong to traffic and freight to pedestrians. 🎢 The best riverfront is reserved for ordinary citizens to enjoy sunsets, daydream, and chat in their daily lives. #NewYork 🌆
