Why Are There Two Goats on Poznań’s Town Hall? 🐐🏛️

One of Poznań’s most iconic symbols is its mechanical butting goats! If you’ve ever visited or heard about this Polish city, you might’ve wondered: Why are goats everywhere here? Today, let me introduce you to Pyrek and Tyrek—Poland’s most famous goats! 🐐💖 Pyrek gets his name from ‘pyra’, a Poznań dialect word for potato 🥔 (because, let’s be real, Poles love their potatoes!). Tyrek comes from ‘tyrać’, a local verb meaning "to work hard" 💪. Every day at noon, these two cheeky goats appear above the clock on the historic Town Hall tower and ram their horns together—just like they’ve been doing since the 16th century! But how did this tradition start? There’s a legend behind it… The Legend of the Escaping Goats 🏃‍♂️🐐 Long ago, a chef was preparing two goats for a grand feast. But the clever goats escaped and ran up to the Town Hall’s tower roof! There, they started butting heads, entertaining the crowd below. The mayor, the governor, and all the guests found it so amusing that they asked a clockmaker to create a mechanical version of the scene. And so, the tradition was born! 🕛✨ A Must-See Tourist Attraction! 🌍📸 Every noon (especially in peak season), crowds gather in the Old Market Square to watch the goats’ playful duel. Many tourists can’t help but laugh at their adorable headbutts—it’s just too cute! 😆 Near the Town Hall, you’ll also find the Muzeum Rogala 🥐 (Croissant Museum), where you can: ✔️ Bake your own rogal świętomarciński (Poznań’s famous marzipan-filled croissant) ✔️ Watch the goat show from the museum windows Who needs to fly to Paris for croissants? Poznań’s rogal is tastier and more unique! 🥐💛 (This museum is one of my favorites—I’ve been multiple times! But that’s a story for another day…) Fun Fact: "Guangzhou is China’s Poznań!" 🇨🇳🐐 Back when I lived in Guangzhou, I’d joke with my family: "This place is like China’s Poznań!" Why? Because goats are everywhere there too! 😂 Have you been to Poznań? Would you visit just to see Pyrek and Tyrek? ✈️💭 #Poland #TravelPoland#Wanderlust #HiddenGems #PolishTraditions #MustVisit #AdventureAwaits 🌍🐐💛
