Its full, official title is San’en-zan Kōdo-in Zōjō-ji—one of the seven great head temples of the Jōdo-shū Seizan branch and a former mortuary temple of the Tokugawa shogunate. 🌿 The temple’s roots stretch back to Bekke, present-day Chiyoda and Kioi-chō, where Shūei, a disciple of Kūkai and one of the “Eight Envoys to Tang China,” founded Kōmyō-ji, a Shingon temple. In 1393, Shōshō Shōnin, the 8th patriarch of Jōdo-shū, converted it to Pure Land Buddhism and renamed it Zōjō-ji. Since then, it has watched over Edo-Tokyo for more than 600 years. 🏯✨ #JapanTravel #TokyoSpot #ZojoJi #SakuraSeason #Tokyo
