I booked a table here to celebrate my hens with my closest friends. I contacted the team four months in advance to make my booking. I booked the semi private dining room for 8pm. Things seemed to be running smoothly, contact from the team was good, they reached out to organise cocktail jugs for the table etc. All of my requests were in writing and their communication was great, even with a change in management, things were going smoothly. I was really looking forward to my night.
When we arrived at 7.50pm, we were immediately told that our table wasn't ready. The waitress gestured to two men, sitting at a table nursing their drinks, and said our table was still occupied. Note: this table was NOT in the semi private dining room. We were asked to wait outside while they organised something else. We were eventually seated, at another random table in the corner. No private dining room, and it was available and sitting empty. We were offered a round of shots as we sat down, which I assumed were complimentary due to the mix up. Nope. We were charged over $1000 for 9 people, the shots added to the bill as well, which I feel was deceptive. The waitress also offered to play "whatever music I wanted" over the speakers to make up for the mix up.
Then the food started coming, and I didn't think it could get any worse. I ate the corn, avocado and beans that were put on the table as an appetiser. Then the fish started coming. I had specifically requested no seafood as I don't eat it myself. It's not an allergy, but a preference, and one that I very clearly made known while organising this booking. We received prawns, fish tacos etc and one extremely dry beef option that no one ate. Food wasn't even placed on to our table, but a table to the side and so the people in the booth side of the table did not have access to food, having to ask everyone to move so they could get out and load their plates. This was a far cry from the long dinner I imagined with my best friends, talking for hours over amazing plates of food.
So for over $1000, I ate some quac and chips and I drank extremely average cocktails. I left feeling hungry and awfully sick.
This was supposed to be my one special night, out with my friends to celebrate my upcoming marriage. For how much effort it was to organise, I wish I'd just stayed home and saved my money, or put that $1000 towards the wedding.
This was my first time visiting Hotel Jesus and I sure as hell won't be back. I don't advise booking here, especially if you're celebrating a...
Read moreShort trip to Melbourne over the holiday period - Dinner at @hoteljesus for some yummy modern Mexican food! The ambiance was trendy, and the service was friendly, although the wait staff were super busy, and it was hard to get their attention at times (not their fault). Still a great place to have good food! . Tostada: Tostada de coloma Ceviche - cured minced snapper, pico de gallo, green chili, and mayonnaise Tostada de Camaron - Cured prawns, celery, green tomato, red onion, coriander, basil & parsley dressing, chipotle mayo & turnip crisps . Tacos: super refreshing and yummy way to start off a meal! These are just full of delicious ingredients 😍😍🤤🤤. Fried fish taco - Battered fish, cabbage, pico de gallo, chipotle mayo: very deliciously fried fish! Spicy chicken skin taco - Chicken skin, pico de gallo, salsa diabla and coriander: this one was very spicy! But a good spicy. The chicken skin was amazing! Fungi taco - Field mushrooms cooked in guajillo, pasilla and morita, pickled fennel, white cabbage: full of yummy flavours! . Clamato mussels - Clamato broth with chili, mussels, fresh salsa, coriander, sourdough: I just love mussels, and the broth was so good! We loved using the bread to dip into the broth. . Huitlacoche enchiladas - Spiced fabel mushroom mix with spices, huitlacoche, cheese, salsa verde, queso, onion and avocado: really delicious enchiladas! Can't really say anything more than that. . Flan: really smooth and not too sweet! Really nice version. . Horchata ice cream: I've never had Horchata before, so I can't really judge the flavour. But, it tasted good, like a plant based milk, and it's not too sweet. It was a warm day, so this was a good way to...
Read moreFirst of all, I was looking forward to go to this place as my partner said they have really good tacos 🌮 when he visited few years back.
Decoration is great. It made me feel like I was really in Mexico even though I haven't been to Mexico. So it was a good vibe and all. Staffs were nice and friendly.
Now about food, we found that everything was quite bland. We had to put chili sauce on everything. Corn, we thought it would be charred corn with black mayo. I'm pretty sure it was corn kennel from a can because it was pretty watery. We thought of tellind the waitress but it was super busy on Saturday night and we were hungry.
Tacos, reasonable price and portion as normal tacos would be but again, it's really bland. Fish, nice slightly battered but I couldn't taste much of anything else. Pork was a bit dry but when you put the sauce on, it's good. Love the chilli 🌶 sauce. Chicken skin, I thought we would give it a try. It took a while as we ordered it last and separately from the other dishes but waitress was attentive after we asked her to check how long further away. --- I had a bite and put it down. I can smell and taste the stale. It wasn't crispy. So I didn't finish it. The grilled cheese one was nice. I don't mind it at all. The pocket thing, I forgot what it's called, it was ok with the sauce too.
Margarita 🍹 (grapefruit) special cocktail was really nice and I enjoyed it. Would I come back? 🤔 not for tacos, sorry. My partner was disappointed too as he thought it would be really good like before. Anyway, give it a try. You might find something you like as we didn't try their main dish because we wanted few small dishes and...
