Oh my god, I think this is the best food I have ever eaten in my life. This restaurant was recommended by the owner of the Airbnb I stayed at, and it blew my mind. First of all, this restaurant has a fire grill in the middle of the room so it stays nice and warm, perfect place to get out of the cold rain! My friend and I ordered off the daily special menu the two times we went, which was trout and mushroom risotto (€28), wild duck and roasted vegetables (€28), partridge and mushrooms (€28), and apple crepes with creme and ice cream (can't remember the cost but it was delicious). Both times we were surprised to get a very small appetizer that came with the meals, a salmon lox the first time, and pumpkin soup the second time. The pumpkin soup tasted like coming back to a home I forgot I had and was so good I wanted to cry. The first meal I got, the wild duck, was so tender and cooked to perfection that I told the server (who may be the owner) it was the best food I ever had and I stand by that. The second time I came and had the patridge and I told my friend that I loved the food so much that I wanted to get married in this restaurant as the ultimate sign of love. The food is pricy, sure, but not anymore expensive than the tourist trap restaurants near the city square and Schaar is 5000x better and worth every cent and more. My only regret is not eating here EVERY DAY. A WORD TO THE WISE: This bistro has somewhat strange hours, so check the hours on this page beforehand! Also if you get a pasta dish, the plain pasta is served separate from the sauce/meat/etc, which was unusual for us tourists, but the food was still great.

The best meal I have had in Belgium! The food was truly special. Each dish carefully composed, with layered flavors. I had the clams as an appetizer and the large prawns cooked in the shell for my main. My boyfriend had the smoked salmon and one of the day’s specials for his main. The food was enhanced by the atmosphere and the service. We popped in without a reservation on a slightly rain day in Bruges. Even though we arrived not too long before they closed for the break between lunch and dinner, we were treated a leisurely and luxurious lunch. If you are looking for an elevated dining experience away from the tourist crowds, I highly recommend Bistro De Schaar.

I had wanted to visit this restaurant for two years and this October I finally managed to get in. I am happy to inform you it met all my expectations. Bistro De Schaar is a beautiful small restaurant focused on grilled meats located right next to Coupure canal, which is a little less touristy part of the Brugge's city center. I had a fantastic venison steak with seasonal vegetables as a side dish and the meal was just delicious. The service was awesome as well and we even got a complimentary appetizer on the house. I also enjoyed the little back story of the restaurant's name (de schaar=scissors). What can I say, nothing like a family-run place. Bedankt!

I ordered frog legs with garlic and parsley as a starter, and Ossobuco alla Milanese for the main course.

The frog legs where simply delicious. However, the Ossobuco was a disappointment, as it was clearly not cooked long enough. There even was a rather large piece of meat that was still raw inside. Given the medium to high prices, this is not acceptable. Overall, the meat wasn't tender, and it wasn't particularly tasty. It wasn't bad, but surely it wasn't like it should be.

I didn't like the service here. The waitress made an uninterested and stiff impression. Maybe it wasn't her day, but I found that she was rather unfriendly.

I wouldn't recommend this place. I won't...
