My recent visit to Pho 478 left me underwhelmed. The initial emptiness of the restaurant should have been a warning sign, but we decided to give it a try.
Our "fresh" spring rolls were anything but. They arrived cold, clearly pre-made and refrigerated, with noticeably wilted produce inside. The only saving grace was the excellent peanut sauce.
My small pho (Order #10) was particularly disappointing. Despite listing several meat items, it contained very little protein, consisting almost entirely of noodles and broth. The portion size itself was also concerningly small, roughly two-thirds the size of a standard "small" bowl at other pho places. While the broth and noodles tasted good, the meager amount of ingredients made for a barely satisfying meal.
I'm genuinely puzzled by the high online ratings for this establishment; they feel deceptive given the poor quality and small portions I experienced. The presence of numerous signs indicating extra charges for basic items like takeout containers were weird.
While the staff seemed nice, I sadly can't recommend Pho 478 unless they significantly improve their portion sizes and commitment to genuinely fresh...
Read moreNew Pho resto in my hood run by a very friendly Vietnamese family. Traditional dark wood decor with comfortable banquet seating. Service was quick, food was well prepared, flavourful and reasonably priced for the generous portions.
Pho broth was clear and clean tasting with the hints of the aromatics if a touch on the sweet side. Good balance of meat to noodle. Rice dish had a well cooked pork chop and egg was perfectly fried with soft yolk and nice fried scallion garnish.
They brought good sized extra bowls, plates and cutlery as we were sharing and were very helpful. Condiments and cutlery were well organized on the table with little sauce dishes included. Jasmine tea was included and came out at the right temperature, not scalding hot.
Only comment is they could offer more toppings and sauce. One lime slice and a tiny bowl of Nuoc Mam sauce was insufficient and they could ask if you need more inorder to save waste. Pho toppings could include traditional sawleaf herb and red Chilis but that's extra and most...
Read moreWife and I just picked up lunch to go from this place. Ordering over the phone was fast and friendly, and the food was packaged nicely and the serving sizes were generous given the price (more than adequate lunch portions, large fresh rolls). As a restauranteur my tastebuds maybe more refined than the general population, but I found flavour of most of the food very unbalanced. The hot and sour soup was so sour from excess vinegar you couldn't taste anything else. The Pad Thai was also very sour and had a overpowering taste of ketchup. The red curry my wife ordered was ok (could be better though), and the fresh rolls were moist, but the dip was also too vinegary and could use rebalancing.
The place is cheaper than the nearby Thai restaurants and they give you good value for the price they charge so if you are looking for affordability this place is for you, personally unless they improve the flavour of their food I would recommend you try some of the other Thai restaurants in...
