New to the HRM area, we popped in to try it out as we were in the area doing some errands. We're from Toronto, have no shortage of good (high-end) Japanese restaurants, and spent some time in Japan dining at some Michelin star restaurants as well.
They take credit card, and though the parking lot is small, there's usually a spot to park and neighbouring lots that you could park at - especially around dinner time. This is a great family run business (bonus if you speak Mandarin); love seeing the kids around helping out how they can even though they seem to be doing homework every time I've popped in so far. =)
Let me start by saying this is not a high end, posh Japanese restaurant, and our bar is very high. However, there's nothing about this restaurant that warrants them getting anything less than 5 stars. The service is excellent, friendly, the prices are fair, the portion sizes are decent, there's nothing bad about it.
We've tried the Sushi Cove party platter (mostly nigiri, some maki), a smaller sushi platter, the udon (soup noodles), chirashi bowl, and tempura.
At the core, the rice is good. They don't use the "best" rice and I don't pick up on much of rice vinegar hints, so I'm guessing they dial that back a bit. I'd love for the rice to have a bit more chew as well, but perhaps that's just my preference.
I'd love for the slices of fish (on the nigiri and sashimi) to be a smidge thicker; we were spoiled in Toronto, as we had access to a popular fish market that specialised in Japanese fish - sashimi, so we always had them cut slightly thicker slices. However, they do it well by balancing the portion of rice - unlike some really stingy places that would give way too much rice and cut the fish as thing as possible. They give you enough rice and fish for a good bite sized portion - for nearly every piece of nigiri we tried, I'd say they were well balanced. I think we just like having our slices of salmon a bit thicker.
The udon was good, the broth had a little kick to it. My kid enjoyed it, and didn't even seem to mind the little spice it had.
Overall, this place offers up good value! No complaints at all. I'd happily go back and give them our...

Read moreNot a great place to eat! IT IS AN EXCELLENT PLACE!! Can I give this place 10 stars please?? Walking into this small but cozy restaurant is like stepping into a whole new country! Because it is built as the back deck/kitchen area of a house, it feels like you’re in a small mom and pop restaurant back in Asia! Not to mentioned that the restaurant is owned and operated by a mom and pop! A family restaurant where everyone helps out! Dad is the chef, mom is the sue chef/cashier and kids help out mom and dad once in a while picking up empertigo plates from satisfied customers that have left!
The food is fantastic! Very fresh tasting ingredients that you can tell we’re bought early that day! Seafood miso soup is served with a sweet fresh scallop, shrimp, imitation crab seaweed and tofu.
A must try are the Red Dragon, golden dragon, volcano role and tiger role!
If sushi is what you have in mind to eat, please give this place a try!
About the only negative thing I can say, is that you can tell that the restaurant has been operating for a long time and could use an upgrade, otherwise...
