The hosts at Twin Peaks, our B&B for our visit, recommended Elliot’s for dinner, and we’re very glad that they did. Like so many places on Manitoulin Island Elliot’s is casual and unpretentious, but it serves really good food at very reasonable prices.
When we arrived the patio was quite busy, but our hosts were very accommodating and friendly as they let us choose from the available tables. They were very prompt to come by and explain the specials and answer questions. As we perused the menu we were a bit disappointed that we couldn’t order a cider (neither of us drink beer), but that disappointment evaporated instantly when our server brought the Wednesday wine special to our attention - $15/bottle (!) for a pretty decent Argentinian table wine.
On to the food.
Appetizer: We shared a Bacon Jam, Goat Cheese and Baguette plate and, as promised by our server, it was a generous serving that satisfied the two of us. More importantly, it was just really good food. The cheese was delicious, and the bacon jam was off-the-charts! They also served enough bread for our dish, which seems oddly rare at many restaurants.
Mains: We had already decided that the Hawburger just had to happen. Elliot’s version of a classic PB&J burger is made special by the addition of Hawberry Jelly (a Manitoulin Island original). The inclusion of pickled jalapeño peppers also provides a fabulous accent to the creamy saltiness of the peanut butter and the tangy sweet of the Hawberry Jelly. This was a really, really good burger.
For our other main we chose the grilled pickerel and it did not disappoint. The fish was cooked to perfection and there was certainly no need to use the tartar sauce provided to add flavour. The fries were cooked well, though as is the style on the island they were not done in crispy twice-fried style. We think the type of potato they use might be giving them a bit of an unusual texture. In this case the fries were certainly enhanced by dipping them in the side of very nicely executed gravy that we ordered.
Desserts: We chose a piece of warm, in-house made apple pie (so yummy) and a Bailey’s cheesecake. While the cheesecake was OK, we definitely would have been happier with two pieces of that mouth-watering pie!
Price: The meal came to $100 (including wine, taxes and tip), a very fair price for the quality of the food and service.
We can definitely recommend Elliot’s and will return on our next visit to...
Read moreI was in on the morning of Saturday, September 19th 2020. I frequent the island during summer months and always stop in Elliots for breakfast. It’s become my breakfast/brunch go-to. I love the atmosphere, the staff is magnificent, and the food is always amazing. This visit however, was the absolute worst. During this Covid crisis we are currently in, it really brought to my attention the lack of concern the patrons & staff had in this particular incident. Having ordered my meal and started on my coffee, I noticed an elderly gentleman seated in the middle of the restaurant coughing and hacking up a lung. He did not cover his mouth, nor did he put on his mask. I was utterly mortified and looked around in horror to see if anyone else was noticeably concerned. The other customers in the restaurant also seemed to notice and some coiled in fear, while others just appeared to shrug it off. This continued to go on for approx 10-15mins until the gentleman paid his bill and left. I should note as well that this gentleman was blowing his nose and leaving the soiled napkins on the table. I watched as a staff member quickly wiped the table (not sufficiently - no disinfectant) and ushered another elderly gentleman to the table. I was appalled, I paid for my meal and left quickly numb to what I had just witnessed. I know I should have spoken up or said something but it is not in my nature to make a scene. But I have learned now that it is a necessity to speak up in these times. If not for ourselves, for everyone else who is put at risk.
I am now back home and knock on wood, I am in good health but thought this...
Read moreI was looking to have a meal on Manitoulin that didn't include white fish and an obscene pile of fresh cut fries covered in gravy which seems to be a staple on this beautiful island. We came to Elliot's at the end of a long day of travelling. I wanted a home cooked style dinner so I ordered the lasagna and garlic bread. It can with a simple and tasty garden salad. Drinks are from a can or bottle. My son had a pogo and fries. Simple. He liked it. The service was fine. Not super friendly but also not rude by any means. Just doing the job. The food was ok. I'm sure the lasagna was microwaved to warm it up since it probably doesn't get served that frequently. The taste just ok. It didn't give me the satisfied feeling I was looking for, it just filled me up. Garlic bread was ok too. Fluffy bread, toasted right with enough garlic butter. So, I can definitely say my romaine lettuce in the garden salad was not washed properly. They may have washed it, but not enough and there was dirt on it in the usual place where dirt sticks to on romaine near the butt. I just put the dirty pieces to the side and ate the clean looking parts The others thing was my son found a hair stuck to his fries, his third last fry. I didn't say anything because we were done and he wasn't bothered by it, almost made me lose my dinner. I left the waitress 20% minimum but figured I won't be back so no point in bringing up the issues. I let restaurants decide if they want want my money or not. I live the island, and there are places there I will always go to when I visit...Elliot's will not be...
