So many factors go into a dining experience – food quality, service, cleanliness, price, atmosphere, view…even the temperature of the food once it’s served. In our experience, few places get everything right, but one’s expectations should be in line with the bill. With that in mind, the Boathouse in Kits was a pleasant evening out. Still…here’s an honest review. Our server was wonderful. She nailed that blend of friendliness, attentiveness, and accuracy that absolutely adds value to the meal and deserves a generous tip. The same can be said of all the staff we had the pleasure of dealing with, including the hostess who reseated us after we discovered our window seat was like sitting in a broiler oven in the late afternoon sun. Once seated outside on the deck, it was a slice of heaven; the breeze was perfect, the view out to the water sublime even though we weren’t right on the railing, and everything was clean and tidy – we both felt like were were on vacation somewhere, not a 5 minute walk from home. We ordered the mixed seafood grill. As we waited, we were admiring the glasses of wine sparkling in the sun on other tables. Having stopped drinking 2 years ago but still wanting something a little special, we ordered a bottle of Sanpellegrino and a separate glass of cranberry juice to add some pizzaz. Our server brought it to the table like she was serving us a special bottle of wine, and once we added a dash of juice, we felt like we were sipping rosé in Manarola. Once the meal arrived, the reality of our dining choice brought us home from Manarola to Vancouver rather abruptly. But that was just fine, because again, we weren’t blowing the month’s dining budget here. The meal presentable, but very pedestrian: The veggies were perfectly cooked if somewhat bland in their seasoning, the 2 prawn + 1 scallop skewer was overcooked and so salty it made my throat tight, the salmon was a little overcooked and missing even a modest slice of lemon to squeeze over it, and the crab-stuffed prawns that had the most potential were crying for a bit of flavourful sauce to dip them in. I get it – timing all those elements to be perfectly cooked at the same time isn’t easy…but expected when dining out. Was it a bad meal? All things taken into consideration – the service, the view and location, the fact that everything was clean and we were sitting in the sun on a beautiful evening, it was a fine meal at that price point. But with just a little better timing in the kitchen and a bit more passion and thought put into the flavours on our plate (a little dipping sauce, a wedge of lemon – anything to make the flavours pop,) it could have been great. But we’ll be back for the service and the view!

Came here for a friend's birthday celebration. As we wanted to try as many different food as possible, we ordered all our food for sharing. This restaurant, though looks a bit fancy, serves in a casual way. It would serve the food in the order in which they were ready. In our case, the steak and the ravioli came first, and the oysters came last. Lol. Among the food we ordered, the best is the steak, second is the oysters and mussels (it's a tie), third is the ravioli and fourth is the calamari. The mixed seafood grill is the last. Why? The seafood was a bit dry and the presentation was quite messy don't you think? We ordered a few glasses of wine by glass, which the menu does not offer too many choices. But those Chardonnay that they have are quite nice. 6oz is about $11-13, and 9oz is about $13-15. Not too bad. The ambience and the service are both pretty good. It would be even better if we didn't visit on a rainy day. I'm sure the ocean view in a good day would highly complement the overall dining experience.

I usually don’t take the time to review places but definitely had to speak out about this one! It started off with the bad attitude of the hostess when asked about seating options. We wanted to sit in the covered area of the patio with a view of the beach. This was misunderstood and we were taken outside to the uncovered area. As we didn’t want to sit in the harsh sun, we asked for the covered area and were given the worst attitude about it and told it was unavailable. We were then seated indoors (with zero view), and we asked our waitress if it was possible to wait for a table to open up in the covered patio area (since we were 10 minutes early for our reservation anyways). She told us that there would be no tables opening up in the next 10 minutes and proceeded to take our order. Within 5 minutes of that, a table opened up in the exact area we had asked for (and our waitress was the one cleaning that table). When she came back with water, we asked if we could be moved there since it was now free. She said she would go check and came back and told us that her manager would come and explain to us why that wouldn’t be possible. 20 minutes later, the manager had still not come to see us. By then, we got our food and we barely touched it because it was made poorly and had zero flavour. When our waitress came to ask us how our food was, she prompted to know how we really felt as we’d barely touched our food. When we told her the truth, she said she would go speak to the manager to get our food compensated for since we were unhappy with it. She then came back and stated that the manager apologized for our experience and offered us a “free appetizer” coupon for our NEXT visit (which can only be redeemed with a purchase of ANOTHER entree). Why would you offer compensation for a bad untouched meal and then return with an offer for us to come back and spend more money on horrible service?? We told our waitress that we will NOT be needing those coupons and left them on the table for the manager. At this point I mentioned to her that the manager, Dave, still hadn’t come to see us (as she had said he would) despite him walking by our table multiple times. She then said he’s too busy running around and sends his apologies instead. I know he didn’t come to see us as he had no real reason or explanation for why we couldn’t sit at the table we had requested (and we had a reservation!) Instead, as more tables kept opening up in that area, they just kept seating the new people that came in at those tables. This entire experience has left a bad taste in my mouth for this establishment. Worse than the food was the unbelievably unprofessional customer service.

Was a really terrible experience. We usually go to the one out in Horseshoe Bay as the ones in Vancouver tend to be...Not as good. We weren't the only only ones miffed. On our way in to be seated another guest that was leaving was politely telling the host about their terrible experience. The guest in front of me commented to the host that he hoped his experience wouldn't be as bad. Turns out it was. Our service was slow, unfriendly, and inefficient. Food was mediocre at best. In an hour and forty five minutes, our server came to check on us once after we got our food. She was civil, but uninterested. When we paid, she stole the leftover credit balance on a gift card as her "tip". She feigned ignorance when we asked where the last card and the remaining balance was. When we confronted her, she pretended to look for it in front of us. She "found" it tucked into an envelope with some cash wrapped in a receipt stating the balance. In the first thirty minutes of sitting there, deciding what to have (large party, took a bit longer to decide), two other parties upped and left before receiving their food (or even ordering). They were seated around the same time that we were. They received next to no attention beyond being seated. The restaurant was not particular busy and there were quite a few servers, so they were not understaffed. I saw quite a few hanging out by the POS, chilling. Once another party left after their meal, the employees left the table dirty for a good fifteen minutes. When someone finally came to clean it, they removed the plates only, then the utensils, ect. Between each set they would walk back to the back. When re-setting the table, a hostess brought four plates, set them, went back, grabbed napkins. Then she repeated with the next set of items. There was another table of four next to us, pleasant ladies. One of their jackets had fallen off the back of their chair. I noticed a server approaching the table, and assumed he would either help her out by picking it up, or letting her know that it was on the floor. Five minutes later, when I looked again, the jacket was still on the floor. I was a little surprised, but realised the first time around the server was carrying a tray full of food. He was on his way back to the back, and I watched him this time. He ignored it, and kept walking towards the back. I waited longer, to see what he would do. On his third way round, he actually kicked the jacket on the floor out of the way. I felt so bad for the lady, I got up and walked to her table to let her know her jacket was on the floor. It was quite the experience and I am sure I will never ever go back.

Dinner and place very good…. But disastrous service! Invited for my birthday this Saturday march 23 we had the chance to taste very good dishes without exception….but our server as soon as we arrived asked us if we wanted to drink something and without even waiting for the answer disappeared, she would come back later to put the chairs straight from a table on 4 sides without even looking at us or asking us again if we wanted to drink or take the order. The order will be taken later without a word, without suggestions, talking to us while looking at the empty table next door and staying away from our table! We are brought our first course (an excellent soup!) We have barely finished it and not yet cleared it when we are already brought the main course without even having time to enjoy or taste at least a sip of our wine! The table of 4 arrives next to us (we had noticed the reservation in the name of employees of the Landrys company) our server completely forgets us and never leaves this famous table! They had the honor of her smile, of the detailed explanation of the menu and even of making humor with the guests and above all she remained in front of them! While absolutely no consideration for us! Many times when she removes the dishes from this table to continue talking with the customers, this server prefers to put the dirty plates on the clean chair at the table set next to her for us to look at. it's incredible! We are served our dessert by another server, but our server does not return to offer if we want a coffee with our dessert! We are not once during the entire experience asked how anything was. Too bad, because it was excellent! Honestly, it should have been a special evening for me and this server really broke this moment for us ! Too bad because the sunset view was breathtaking and a very good dinner…. Obviously the tip was up to the standard of the service and anyway nobody was there to say goodbye, we left as if we were in a Mcdonald's!

Great location. But the food was actually worse than what you would typically expect for a tourist site restaurant. We had ordered the calamari, and we basically got a few thin dry stripes of calamari heavily encrusted with batter and some tempera vegetables (thin strips of tempera fries?). Placed on top of a heaping pile of crispy noodles. We also got the ceveiche, and it had very little fish and scallops and avocado that was shaped into a hockey puck of blandness, served with a plate with dry taco chips. We did complain to the shift manager about the food quality. He said that he would take care of it. Surprisingly, we found we were discounted when our final bill arrived. (Thank you to the boathouse) The service staff were great, and there no issues with the ambiance, and the sunset view was spectacular. We honestly did not expect the food to be great, but certainly not to be as disappointing as it turned out to be. It was a hey, let's go for a beer and appetizers last minute decision. The meal was low quality, in a high-quality location. We were expecting to receive Dennys or White Spot quality food, but we got a Macdonalds take on fine dining at higher prices. The beer selection was pretty basic, too. I have eaten at nice 5 star restaurants and have eaten 1/2 cooked/ half frozen canned stew on army winter exercises. I know what a good meal is. Next time we visit Kits Beach, we will be doing take-out from the nearby Thai restaurant. Plus, bringing our own beer to Kits Beach, I suggest you do the same.
