Went here for a group meeting for a club I'm part of. Bill was $30 for two of us, not bad, included dinner, coffee afterward with some ice cream. Put in a $7 tip. The way I write my 7s, I put a slash in it. All of a sudden, two transactions on my bank card for $30 and $32, nothing for $37. My take on it, the waitress tried to round up my handwriting to close off the 7 and make it a 2, then put a 3 in front of it, to give herself a $32 tip. Isn't the first time it's happened to me unfortunately and probably won't be the last due to dirtbags out there.
Called and spoke with the manager, explained the $30 bill is legit, but $32 is definitely not. I'm a decent tipper, but no way giving the waitress a tip that's worth over 100% of the original bill. $7 is generous enough, being more than 20% of the original bill. That is extra generous considering she didn't come back to our table to ask us how we were doing, didn't refill our water, didn't ask for dessert (we moved tables to sit somewhere else and had to explicitly ask a second waitress for the coffee and ice cream mentioned above), etc, basically the normal things you expect from a waitress.
I got the refund from the $32 illegit charge, the $30 charge disappeared, and got charged the $37 I was originally expecting ($30 bill plus $7 tip). But knowing what I would've gone through, I should've tipped nothing.
On a plus side, the food was decent. Ordered a chicken walnut salad. Got a good amount of food at a decent price. But again, poor service. My company, she got the cheese ravioli with meatballs. Decent amount of food at decent price. Diner is good size with plenty of parking and open all hours of the night.
Because of my experience with the charges, I would absolutely avoid this place entirely. Doesn't matter how good the food is, if they're going to put fraudulent charges on your card, find another place to eat. While the manager did refund the fraudulent charge quickly, had I not been actively watching the charges that go on my card, I would have not caught it and been out money I shouldn't have been.
Also, received no call from the manager with an apology for what happened. Really? You're the manager. By refunding me, you are acknowledging the transaction was fraudulent, and for me, apologies go a LONG way to resolving things. But at this point, though, what's an apology going to do? As an adult and a manager, you should know this. Poor service therefore not just from the waitress while we're eating but also from the manager after this situation.
That being said, entirely possible it's an honest mistake. It does happen. However, in this situation, I doubt it was an honest mistake due to two things. One, I spoke to the manager twice and gave her my phone number. If it was an honest mistake, she could have called me and explained what happened. But since she didn't call me back, it makes me believe the waitress did try to rip me off. And two, the amounts of the charges themselves, very suspicious.
Unfortunately, my club meets at this diner frequently, so to attend club meetings, I have to go here. But I assure you this, in the future, I will ABSOLUTELY AVOID paying with my credit card and only pay with cash. And from now on, they will ONLY get a coffee order from me, and I'll wait to eat dinner somewhere else. They may profit off my individual business, but it'll only be off a cup of coffee.
