I recently had the pleasure of dining at Ratskeller München, and it was an absolutely beautiful experience! This old-style German restaurant perfectly captures the essence of Bavarian culture, with its stunning classic decor and warm, inviting atmosphere. Located right at Marienplatz, it’s a must-visit for anyone looking to experience traditional German hospitality and cuisine.
From the moment I stepped in, I was transported back to the 19th century with its charming cellar-like ambiance and beautiful wooden interiors. The walls adorned with classic paintings and vintage-style furnishings made the experience feel authentic and cozy.
I ordered the Bratwurst Sampler, which was a delightful assortment of various traditional sausages, including Nuremberg-style bratwurst, skinless veal sausage, smoked beef beerknaack-bratwurst, and schnaps bratwurst. The platter also included grilled bacon, sauerkraut, and creamy mashed potatoes. Each sausage had its own unique flavor and texture, perfectly showcasing the diversity of Bavarian cuisine. The sauerkraut was tangy and paired wonderfully with the smoky, savory sausages, while the mashed potatoes were smooth and buttery, complementing the meal.
To accompany the meal, I had the Löwenbräu Premium Dark Lager Dunkel (0.5L), which was rich, smooth, and slightly sweet. It had deep, malty undertones that went perfectly with the hearty meal. I also tried the Franziskaner Weizen (Wheatbeer), which was refreshing, light, and crisp — a perfect contrast to the dark lager.
Overall, the dining experience at Ratskeller München was exceptional. The service was attentive and friendly, making me feel welcomed and well cared for throughout my meal. The combination of delicious food, classic Bavarian decor, and warm service makes this place a must-visit for anyone exploring Munich. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a taste of authentic German cuisine. I can't wait to...
Read moreTucked away beneath the bustling Marienplatz in the heart of Munich, Restaurant Ratskeller continues to be our go-to culinary haven year after year. What might appear at first glance to be a typical tourist spot turned out to be a pleasantly authentic gem, with traditional German charm and exceptional hospitality that keeps us coming back three to four times each visit.
The ambiance strikes a beautiful balance between old-world elegance and cozy Bavarian tradition. Despite its prime location in one of Munich’s most iconic squares, there’s nothing gimmicky here. The warmth of the staff and the consistently high-quality food prove it’s anything but a tourist trap.
We can’t help but rave about the house side salad. A crisp, fresh staple that pairs wonderfully with every dish. And their potato salad? Easily among the best we’ve ever tasted: perfectly seasoned with that distinctive German tang and texture. The schnitzel is another standout, available in two sizes to suit your appetite. For a hearty, satisfying meal, the larger portion, with its generous accompanying salad is well worth choosing.
Dessert here is no afterthought. Whether it’s the comforting Apple Strudel, the fragrant Apple and Cinnamon tart, or the luscious cheesecake, each bite is a delicious conclusion to the meal.
What truly elevates Ratskeller, though, is the service. Thoughtful, efficient, and always delivered with genuine care, something rare in such a busy tourist hub.
If you're in Munich and want a memorable dining experience tucked beneath the city’s most famous square, we wholeheartedly recommend making Ratskeller a regular stop. It’s become a treasured part of our travels, and we’re already looking forward to...
Read moreThis was a very disappointing experience from the start. We had a table booked for 16 and they had it listed as a table for 8. The manager was rude and denied the booking was for 16. Eventually he came back and admitted there had been an error. We were put in a very out of the way area with no restaurant atmosphere. We were sat on 3 separate tables and it took nearly 45 minutes just to be served a drink. The waiter was very nice but he was clearly overstretched with his work load. My food looked nothing like the picture and it was only warm and very average. I would describe it as edible. My friends soup was just warm and also the baked Camembert she ordered had to be remade and you only got two pieces and the description showed three pieces. Waiter helped where he could. Again it was just OK. Food wasn’t served together so not a dining experience. Some ladies on the other tables had nearly finished their meal when others were just receiving there’s. Management were rude and very dismissive in general and there was no apology or acceptance of fault from anyone. Roman was our waiter and we were lead to believe her could lose his job over our complaint. None of our issues were to do with his service but he became quite stressed when we were trying to sort the bill. It was not a pleasurable experience at all and not a cheap meal by any means. Very disappointing and I would never return or recommend this...
