Tonkatsu Hajime — Restaurant in Shimoda

We came here for lunch and it was such a lovely experience. Only one other party at the restaurant (locals). We spoke a tiny bit of japanese and the owner recommended the mixed katsu set (1350). It was already a big serving and the owners kept offering us and the other people food like fish, more miso soup, and curry. They were so so kind and generous. We tried the curry that they offered us and it was super good. I wish I could have spoken more with them, but it was mainly just “thank you!”, “it’s ok (大丈夫)”, and “おいしい！”. We happened upon this place as we searched for a hearty lunch. We were a little late for lunchtime so the place was empty when we arrived. We were pleased that it was a one man operation. The proprietor was very friendly and generous with the portions. I was craving katsudon and my husband asked him to make whatever he thought was delicious. He wound up with a chicken and onion dish, a pork croquette, and a big bowl of curry. Delicious!

A small shop but have car parking of upto 5 cars. The shop owner is an elderly couple but they treat you well with good hospitality. They speak Japanese only. So for easy reference, they kept the recommended menu in English where the photos of the fried combo dish is attached. The volume is more and tastier. They provide おかわり for rice and soup for free.
