They said Japan makes good pizza so we decided to look for one close to our stay in Japan. We decided to go to ‘Pizza & Craft Beer Gufo’. It was pretty busy for a 8pm dinner. Lots of young folks. Good crowd having a good time chatting and listening to good music in the background. The guy who greeted us was very friendly, helpful and spoke some English. We sat in the way back but was moved after since a bigger group was waiting. I didn’t mind as it was pretty tight back there and it was only three of us. The new group had 6 people but they were skinnier than us. LOL This place was not too big and limited seating so I can imagine when it gets busy.
We ordered the below: -The half half of Margherita Extra & 4 Formaggi - was good! ¥2980/ @$20 (5 stars) Supreme Pizza - which was like a combo pizza ¥2680 / less than $19 (5 stars) Ceasar salad -good for group to share. ¥880 / @$6 (4 stars) grapefruit beer ¥680 / @$5 (5 stars) Peach beer ¥680 / @$5 (5 stars)
Everything was pretty good except salad was average. The pizza size was more like a medium with 6 slices which was perfect for the three of us. I really loved the crust was not too much bread but tastes good from the fire oven. We saw the guy making it and cooking in a copper fire oven.
They open mainly for dinner during weekdays from 6pm-11pm, weekends open for lunch then a break for dinner but closed Tues/Wed. I can confirm, Japan does make good pizza! I totally recommend to try this place in Ikebukuro...
Read moreDespite trying most of the top pizza parlours in Tokyo. In my humble opinion, Gufo currently takes the crown.
Service is via QR code - fast and prompt. Atmosphere - a lot of American rock and metal playing in the background. Clean and spacious. Beers - A good selection of Japanese brews including Uchu and Teenage brewing.
Ordered the following pies: Marghuerita: Just a simple combination of tomato sauce, cheese, and basil leaves. Meatball & Ricotta - a cream based pizza. Siciliana - tomato sauce based with capers, anchovies, and cherry tomatoes.
The pizza crust isn't burned with a little bit of savory salt flavor to keep it from being straight dough, just a small rim of it so as not to be intrusive, and thick enough that the sauces just don't run through it to leave it a floppy mess.
Total bill for 3 pizzas, fries and 2 beers came shy...
Read morePizza and beer selection is top notch. Not many places in Japan make pizza this good. I’ve eaten a good chunk of the menu at this point and every single one we been great. (Hot honey is my personal #1!) the beer is a decent selection of twenty or so rotating domestic and international brews. There’s a bit of everything so it’s great to please a crowd. Non pizza food was also a hit, but the pizza is definitely the star of the show.
Also, the staff are very kind. They speak a bit of English, so Japanese not required.
The location is a bit far from the station, but it’s worth the trek for some top notch pies and...
